Professional Experience
Researcher/Designer
IV Prev: Strathclyde Medtech

Summer 2013 (3 months)

I was employed through the department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) within the University of Strathclyde to refine and validate an external client’s medical device to be brought to market. Through my involvement the company gained the knowledge, contacts and appropriate documentation to allow the manufacture of the product.

Tasks carried out included:

  • Research into relevent standards and directives

  • An enhanced Product Design Specification

  • Application of DFMA, design for robustness, material research and Finite Element Analysis

  • Identification of potential manufacturers/material suppliers and their requirements

Taking part in this allowed me to relate my university learning to industry practice and develop an appreciation of the crucial relationship that exists between a designer/researcher and client.

Research/Designer
Oasips Hydration: Strathclyde Medtech

Sep - Dec 2014 (4months)

After a successful project the previous year I was employed again through the department of DMEM to design a hydration product for use in the health care industry. Focusing primarily on the early stages of the design process I was able to investigate current hydration systems used within the health care industry and gather information from nutritional experts.

Outcomes included:

  • A large range of initial concepts

  • three developed products with prototypes

Working closely with the client gave me an understanding of the itterative nature of the concept generation and development process. Regularly repeating concept generation and refinment methods until the client's requirements were met.

Malawi Project: Volunteering

June 2009

I was selected from over 260 pupils to participate in a charity project based in Blantyre, Malawi. 23 students travelled to Malawi where we built and renovated numerous classroom blocks as well as toilet and wash facilities.

Having seen the deprivation in which these people live and work whilst maintaining a positive outlook on life has made me grateful and determined to make the bet of my own opportunities. Furthermore, the experience of working in a foreign country raised my awareness and understanding of various working cultures, which will stand me in good stead for my professional career.

Counsellor: Lake of the Woods Summer Camp

June 2012 - August 2012

I was employed as a camp counselor, guitar teacher and model rocketry teacher at Lake of the Woods summer camp in Michigan, USA. After 10 weeks of employment I spent 4 weeks travelling from the northern to southern states.

Through my passion and energy I was recognised for my leadership qualities and awarded the position of Team Leader during the “Final Colour Days” competition; leaving me in sole charge of children of all ages leading and encouraging them through 30 challenging events.
